Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my paycheck?
Gross pay, minus federal income tax (after the standard deduction), Social Security (6.2% up to $176,100 in 2025), Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% at high incomes), and state income tax where applicable. The calculator above runs all of it.
How accurate is this paycheck calculator?
It's a solid estimate for budgeting: exact federal brackets, FICA caps, and each state's rate structure. It does not model pre-tax deductions beyond 401(k)/health, credits, local taxes (except NYC approximated), or state SDI programs. Always compare with a real pay stub.
What's the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
Biweekly = every two weeks, 26 checks/year (two months have three checks). Semi-monthly = twice a month, 24 checks. Same annual pay, different check size — the calculator lets you set the period count.
Why is my actual paycheck different?
Common gaps: state SDI/disability withholdings (CA ~1.2%), local taxes (Ohio/PA cities), health premiums, 401(k) percentage vs dollar, garnishments, and W-4 step-2/3 adjustments. This estimator sticks to the big three: federal, FICA, state.
