The three restaurant payroll traps
1. Tip credit math: if claimed tips + cash wage don't reach full minimum wage, the employer owes the gap — track both. 2. Side work: pre-shift prep and post-shift cleanup are hours worked, even for tipped staff. 3. Split-shift premiums: California and a few cities owe extra for unpaid mid-day gaps. The calculator keeps the hours honest; know which add-ons your state requires.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours with tips?
Track wage hours in the sheet; enter tips in the Tips field (calculator options) — kept separate from wages, because tip-credit rules apply the tip toward minimum wage rather than adding it to OT math. Gross wages + tips both show in the results.
What is the tip credit?
Federal law lets employers count tips toward minimum wage (cash wage ≥ $2.13 with tip credit up to $5.12 in 2025), but only if tips actually make up the gap — if they don't, the employer owes the difference. Many states (CA, WA, OR...) don't allow tip credit at all. This calculator doesn't auto-apply credits; ask payroll how yours works.
How do split shifts work?
A split shift (lunch rush, off 3 hours, dinner rush) is one workday with two stints — enter both spans as the day's in/out and second break-like gap... simpler: use the two-break columns for the unpaid gap between shifts, and your worked hours come out right. In California, split shifts can owe a premium (see the CA calculator).
Do tipped employees get overtime on tips?
OT is computed on the regular rate including tips where a tip credit applies — effectively OT at 1.5× the full minimum wage when the credit is maxed. This is why tipped OT looks small on checks; verify with your state's rules.
